Ep. 46 Hong Kong Protests (ft. Leo Weese)

On this week’s episode of the Unhashed Podcast: Leo Weese of the Hong Kong Bitcoin Association joins us to fill us in on everything that is happening in Hong Kong and its struggle to remain free of China’s jackboot. What is the end game for China and Hong Kong, and what are the incentives at play? How has the protest affected everyday life compared to previous protests and what makes this one different? And...how is this conflict affecting Bitcoin?

Summary of the events in Hong Kong:

  1. As a bit of background for our listeners, here are some key events that have taken place in Hong Kong over the last 6 months

    1. February 2019 – Hong Kong’s Security Bureau submits a paper to the city’s legislature proposing amendments to extradition laws that would provide for case-by-case extraditions to countries, including mainland China, beyond the 20 states with which Hong Kong already has treaties.

    2. April 3, 2019 – Carrie Lam’s government introduces amendments to Hong Kong’s extradition laws that would allow criminal suspects to be sent to mainland China for trial.

    3. April 28, 2019 – Tens of thousands of people march on Hong Kong’s parliament to demand the scrapping of the proposed extradition laws.

    4. May 14, 2019 – Hong Kong legislators clash over the proposed law, with some democrats shouting “Scrap the evil law”.

    5. June 4, 2019 – More than 120,000 students, alumni, staff and parents from 185 secondary schools sign a petition against the extradition law.

    6. June 14, 2019 – Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam indefinitely delays the proposed extradition law in a dramatic retreat after violent street protests.

    7. Today July 12 - As protests around the city continue to escalate, Hong Airport enters its 5th day of being shut down.
